One tradition we're happy to ditch is the symbolism associated with a multi-tiered cake and it's reference to status or wealth.  Nowadays, the type and size of your cake is a personal, creative choice often based on the mood and style of your wedding. 

A beautiful, simplistic style to try is a single tier cake adorned with fresh flowers, fruit or a statement cake topper. For a rustic look choose homemade cakes with unfinished, textured icing. To suit a modern wedding incorporate bold colours, patterns or a clean, minimalistic design. 

If you have a large guest list create a dessert bar with several single tier cakes displayed on beautiful cake stands at varied heights (and provide cute take home bags to double as wedding favors!).
